Welcome master’s students: A message from the Dean

Dean Sandra Smith welcomes new and returning master’s students to a new academic year and reflects on the opportunities ahead for our growing community.

Dear Brown University Master’s Students,

As the Dean of the Division of Master’s and Professional Programs, it is my privilege to welcome you as we begin another year of discovery, growth and community at Brown. To those arriving in Providence and those joining virtually, welcome.

Master’s students are not only beginning a new academic year; you are stepping into an experience that will challenge your thinking, expand your perspectives and shape your future.

A dynamic, diverse cohort

This year, Brown welcomes over a thousand new master’s students, both in person and online. Among them:

  • 44% are international students, bringing diverse global perspectives.
  • 18% identify as historically underrepresented in higher education.
  • 108 are returning Brown alumni, now embarking on graduate studies.

Together, these students bring diverse research interests, professional experiences and perspectives that fundamentally enrich not only their own education but also that of the wider community. This remarkable blend of backgrounds and expertise is what makes our academic community so dynamic and drives the kind of innovative scholarship that defines a Brown education.

Resources to support success

Master’s students are fully supported on this journey. The Center for Master’s Student Excellence (CMX) serves as a central resource for academic advising, wellness resources, financial guidance or career guidance.

Brown’s faculty aren’t just instructors – they are mentors and future collaborators, eager to open doors to new ideas and discoveries. Students are encouraged to engage openly and let their passions intersect with those of their faculty mentors.

Building community beyond the classroom

Graduate education extends beyond the classrooms. It is equally about the connections made with peers, the exchange of ideas across disciplines and the communities built together.

Throughout the year, students are encouraged to engage in events, workshops and cultural celebrations organized by CMX. These opportunities foster belonging and create the kinds of relationships that alumni often describe as the most memorable and transformative part of their Brown experience.

Staying informed and engaged

To remain connected to the many opportunities and resources available, students can turn to our social media, the CMX website and other communication channels that highlight upcoming events, career services and community programming.

Looking ahead

This year holds tremendous promise for growth and discovery. In an era of rapid change, the ability to think critically, engage respectfully across differences and collaborate creatively has never been more important. Brown master’s students are uniquely prepared to rise to this moment, and their contributions will shape both the University community and world beyond.

Welcome to the 2025-26 academic year, and best wishes for a rewarding and successful journey ahead.

Warm regards,

Sandra Smith
